LINE UP

That Was Me

Born on 18 June 1942, Paul McCartney grew up in a musical household in the ever-changing port city of Liverpool. As a teen, McCartney taught himself the craft of songwriting and how to play the guitar and piano, which led to a career that has inspired countless musicians and entertained generations of fans.

From iconic Beatles performances at Liverpool’s Cavern Club and on The Ed Sullivan Show to his memorable moments as a member of Wings and as a solo artist, the Liverpudlian is one of the most respected musicians in British history.

From the Quarry
to the Cavern

In 1957, Paul McCartney joined The Quarry Men, a band started by John Lennon with whom he would form one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in music history. Shortly after, George Harrison joined the group and the trio went on to form The Beatles in 1960. In 1962, Ringo Starr completed the classic Beatles line-up and, with that, rock ’n’ roll history was born.

Throughout the 1960s, the band revolutionised the music industry. In recognition of their success, Elizabeth II appointed each of The Beatles a Member of the British Empire (MBE) a few years before their live rooftop swansong in 1969.

RAM On

At the start of the 1970s, Paul McCartney set his sights on solo success. Released in 1970, his self-titled album McCartney, featuring fan favourite ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’, peaked at number one and number two in the United States and United Kingdom respectively.

The musical partnership he formed with his first wife, Linda, also led him to even more success. In 1971, they released the album RAM, which reached number one in the UK and features ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’, McCartney’s first number one single outside of The Beatles.

Spreading His Wings

The musical partnership he formed with his first wife, Linda, led him to even more success. In 1971, they released the album RAM, featuring ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’, which became Paul McCartney’s first number one single outside of The Beatles. Continuing their momentum, the couple formed the band Wings with The Moody Blues’ Denny Laine.

No More Lonely Nights

Throughout the 1970s, Wings released a wave of hits, including ‘Band on the Run’ and the iconic Bond theme ‘Live and Let Die’. Nevertheless, by the 1980s, it was all change as Wings folded. With the band no more, Paul McCartney returned to his solo work and collaborated with a variety of notable artists, including Stevie Wonder.

In 1984, McCartney returned to number one with ‘Pipes of Peace’, and he also memorably provided the soundtrack to the animated short film Rupert and the Frog Song.

A Sound Collage

The 1990s saw Paul McCartney record alongside Martin “Youth” Glover, a record producer and founding member of Killing Joke, in the experimental music duo The Fireman. Since 1993, they have produced three albums, with their musical output ranging from electronica to rock.

McCartney’s more recent catalogue features other surprising additions, including several original songs for the soundtrack to the videogame Destiny. His influence can be felt across multiple genres, with his work being covered by a range of industry heavyweights, from Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan to Guns N’ Roses and Beyoncé.

Now And Then

In 1996, it was announced that Paul McCartney had been conferred with a knighthood for his services to music. Two decades later, he was also appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour.

Today, he plays globally to sold-out venues, and his latest studio album, McCartney III, reached number one in the UK in 2020.

In 2023, The Beatles shocked fans with the release of ‘Now And Then’, their long-awaited, final song. Created from an unreleased demo by John Lennon, it was their first UK number one single since 1969, bringing things full circle for The Beatles and demonstrating Paul McCartney’s enduring legacy.
